What Causes Cracks In Ash Trees?

Many homeowners become concerned when they discover a crack developing in the trunk or large limbs of an ash tree. While cracks often attract immediate attention, the crack itself is usually a symptom rather than the underlying cause of the problem.

Several different conditions may contribute to cracking in ash trees, including environmental stress, storm damage, previous injuries, structural weaknesses, rapid growth, trunk stress, and declining tree health. Because multiple factors may produce similar symptoms, identifying the underlying cause is often an important part of evaluating the tree's condition.

Homeowners should also watch for other warning signs such as dead branches, bark damage, yellow leaves, leaf loss, thinning foliage, poor growth, root problems, and overall canopy decline. Multiple symptoms may provide a clearer picture of what may be affecting tree health.
